Magical Bits

Unexpected-intrusions-of-beauty
This week blew me away. Just after my last post, life unfolded in such a beautiful way. And I love when life does that.
From sweet, surprising gifts to unexpected, delicious dinners with family or just the gorgeous, low humidity July weather, my last full week at 30 was marvelous. I’m thankful and highly unworthy.

All of this beauty doesn’t even include the birth of My Head’s Baby Lily or the magical Labyrinth night I shared with my fair Ludo by my side. Aah true, true Dancing Magic!

Days like this

*Because real life also looks and feels like this*

I’m exhausted.
Since my wisdom extraction, I’ve just been feeling less than stellar. My body is not happy with me.
Sleep and I are clearly fighting and I’m so over it.
Give me sleep or give me death. For real.

We also haven’t hit the gym in two weeks. Good grief.
There have been random neighborhood strolls, but there’s been nothing consistent and fantastic. And that irritates me, because I have goals and running that need to happen and not moving won’t get me there any quicker.

Emotionally and physically I’m just so worn out.
I need a vacation from my brain.

Even still, I really am looking forward to many things occurring within this week.
My Head is having her third human, her first baby girl. Praying for a way easier delivery for her this go round than her last. Fingers crossed, candles lit, prayers activated, moon dances all around.
This week marks the arrival of Baby Lily and the Return of Doveface.
And thank God for both!
The Return of Doveface can mean only good things. This girl is a light in my darkest times. I thank God for her. She has a way of knowing when I need encouragement the most. From our locker sharing and study hall sleeping days, to our 2008 “smiling” and drinking patio nights to now when we’re trying to climb our way into Heaven’s bed, this girl just gets me. Always has and always will. I’m beyond excited for the many coffee and running dates we are about to set.

And of course, the week will conclude with my pre-birthday throw down, which begins Friday with a “Labyrinth” viewing on the big screen. Oh I can’t even begin to describe my happiness for this night. Wearing my Sarah shirt (that now fits – woot.), with my Ludo next to me, all the quotes will be recited as Bowie graces us in all his magnificent glory. 😉 Bring. It. On! Happy Birthday to me.

So yeah, it’s funny even with many beautiful blessings this week, I’m still feeling meh and tired.
It happens. That’s life. Sometimes it’s hard to smile even when there’s much to smile about. True story.
Coffee will help. Coffee always helps. And music. And Koda. Still grateful, always grateful.

Scenes from Memorial Day Weekend

From Friday night to Monday night, I don’t think Fishface and I slowed down a bit.
Memorial Day weekend was jammed packed and so fabulous that we didn’t even turn the TV on.

Let’s recap:
Friday “yard sale prep night” turned into “visit with two sets of neighbors night” and then have “a great number of Blue Moons at best friend neighbor’s house night.” Feared that would make for hangover Saturday, but we came out on top.
Though 5:30 Saturday morning came soon and then it was Mission Yard Sale til noon. Fishface fetched Gibson Donuts for us and the neighbors, so we were all hyped up on sugary goodness. Once the crowds thinned, we all packed up the cars full of Goodwill and library book donations and then treated ourselves to beer and wings for a job well done. Can we say mega cheat day – no exercise and no nutrients. My body was confused.
After a nap, Fishface and I got wild and crazy and decided to hit Lowe’s. (Incoming deep thought: because when God tells you to quite literally build and grow a garden with your husband, you do it. More on that later.)
With no plan, we ventured into the store near dark and picked out a variety of pretties and a dozen bags of mulch.

A few things of Petunias, Angelina and a rare weirdo Celosia later and we called it a night with promise to begin our next day just as early as we did that morning.
Sunday from 6 to noon we raked out weeds, old mulch, old tarp and finished one part of our garden. We tabled the bigger portion for Monday (because who doesn’t want to spend their off day overhauling a garden), so we could hit the pool with the neighbors. We tried to convince our sweet neighbors to grab a shovel and gloves to help us in this renovation, but only their four-year-old took the bait. 😉
The pool – let’s talk about the pool. I LOVE SUMMER! (yes, I know summer comes in June, but to me if it’s hot then it’s summer). I love everything about it. I was lucky enough to always have some form of pool in my life since I was a kiddo, and I relished every day I could in the backyard. I love the smell of suntan lotion (though I don’t use it), I love the sun as it moves across the water throughout the day, I love listening to my tunes as I float around all day. I just love it all. This was my sole purpose for getting our Y membership – the pool. If it’s sunny, I’ll be there.
So, yeah we took a much-needed, long-awaited pool break.

After pool and dinner time, it was back to the neighbors for game night. I’m kinda wondering why we don’t just all live together at this point. Ha. And we are seriously addicted to Catan. Might need an intervention.

Catan Denomination (yes that's incorrect on purpose)

Catan Denomination (yes that’s the incorrect word on purpose, because yes I really said that. Ha.)

Project Awesome Garden meant yet another early morning Monday. New tarp was laid, holes were cut, holes were dug, plants were planted, mulch was spread.

Aren't I adorable?

We finished it up just in time to hit the grocery for our dinner cookout with…guess who…the neighbors…lol. We were lucky enough to have a serviceman guest of honor for our Memorial Day cookout. Neighbor John’s Pops, aka Grumpsy, attended our shindig and it was such a joy to chat with him over dinner. A true gentleman!

Before that though, since it was gorgeous Monday, I knew where I had to be that afternoon. Back to the pool. I had not one care that we needed to clean or do laundry before hosting people in our home. Pool takes priority every.single.time.

Pool was again much-needed after our labor in the garden. Y’all! Gardening is hard work. We were so sore from Sunday, that we regretted not finishing it all that morning, because bending down was near impossible Monday. I’m still not right from it all. Forget the gym – gardening is where it’s at (two turntables).
And finally, after our yummy cookout (neighbor Heather makes the best burgers ever in the world, ever known in the history of mankind!) we wrapped up the weekend with an X-Men viewing.
Now, a little background on me and action movies. I whine every time I feel I’m going to be dragged to one. I selflessly took Fishface to see Thor on his birthday, because there was nothing in it for me. (Lies: Thor is HOT!).  So, when the gang wanted to venture off to X-Men I had a few thoughts: 1. It’s a school night aka work night… I still consider them school nights. 2. I should stay home and write my article for the paper 3. I don’t hate X-Men, but hmm…I really wanna see a Rom-Com. (I always want to see a Rom-Com.)
Procrastination and my better judgement won. I went and not to any surprise I loved it. I must remember I really do love action movies. It’s just getting me there that’s the hard part, then I enjoy every minute of it. Great movie. Go see it.
If you’re still reading, which I hope you are, I’ll leave you with a collage (learned how to do that one – finally. Learning. Winning.) of our garden before and after.

Oh and one ADORABLE pic of Koda supervising our work. He’s sitting on a bench in front of the window, letting us know he is fully capable of tearing down the house if he should so choose. This dog makes my heart beat.

This man’s voice is intoxicating. I cannot get enough. All the Sam Smith, please!
And this song stays on repeat.

Weeks like these

It’s Friday again, and that rules. Yet at the same time I’ve lost a whole week of blogging. I intended to blog about our Whole Foods extravaganza, joining the Y, cooking more soup this week, trying a new restaurant, my new glasses. Take your pick.
But this week was full of sloth and guess what…I am perfectly OK with that. I decided early on this week that I will not beat myself up over the mounds of laundry that still need doing, the meals that didn’t get prepared, the whatever else didn’t get done.
Because weeks like these happen and if you don’t embrace them with all the yuckiness, the gross weather and failed to-do lists, then you’ll never get over that hump. I, my friends, am a hump jumper. Say that three times. Well, I just did it and that’s not so hard. Ha.
So instead of all the things that didn’t get accomplished this week, let’s focus on what did.

1. We went to the gym twice this week. Not much you say? No, it’s not. But like Fishface said, “It’s more than the zero last week.” We even went in the pouring rain and blistering cold Sunday. A decision I regretted come Monday and Tuesday when I fought off the beginnings of a cold. Sleep eluded me a lot this week because of it, therefore causing the slacker in me to settle in to recover. And it worked. I fought back like a ninja (do not like that word).
2. In full disclosure, I ate sugar Wednesday night. That isn’t awesome. I made it almost two weeks with no blatant sugary deliciousness. Damn you O’Charley’s and your free pie. What happened to counteract that sugar is the fact that I tracked my food all week, even that darned pecan pie. And I didn’t let that pesky piece derail my eats the next day. I owned it, enjoyed it and moved on. Y’all! This is a big, huge piece of getting my mind right when it comes to weight loss. For me, it’s super important to own it, MOVE on and not let each bad bite turn into days of regret and even more bad bites. Hence, accomplishment.
3. I picked up my new specs yesterday. And something about donning frames makes me feel more intellectual and spunky. Though I kinda feel like an 80-year-old who needs glasses, I really don’t because they’re just for driving and watching TV. My vision is good. The doc prescribed them just to “crispen” (totally a word now) things up.

4. More pantry items were thrown together this week to make chicken enchilada soup. It was mediocre. Fishface said it was delish. It was super easy, though filled with stupid amounts of sodium.  It was a recipe I had on Pinterest, but for the slower cooker. I Googled a non-slow cooker version in my quest to defeat any sickness trying to set up camp within my body.

5. I got to watch my youngest niece blow out her birthday candles and open the presents I sent her. Win: the package got there exactly on her birthday! Bigger Win: Thank God for FaceTime. Even bigger win: Her face.
I had a moment while watching her open everything this week when I realized how grown she’s getting and how she’s no longer a baby. She’s entered her tween years and she’s getting more beautiful every single day. Then, I had a moment about how I’ve missed out on most of her years of growing, since the fam moved when she was just a wee babe. I’m so grateful for technology for allowing us to share in these moments. And I’m so thankful she’s my niece. Watching any of my nieces do anything…anything at all…fills me up. They are my heart.

6. I’m surviving the brutally cold weather the Mid-South has been getting each and every day. I’m ranting about it, but I’m getting out in it and trying to be grateful we don’t have mounds of snow like everywhere else in the nation. But dang y’all, it’s COLD and I’m over it.

Random bits:
* I woke up suddenly in the middle of the night a lot this week with turbo brain. One night I had the overwhelming urge to make a quiche at 2 a.m. What in the world?! That same night I contemplated what I’m gonna do with the rest of my life. These moments where you’re kinda awake, but still in some sleep stage is where clarity lies I think. Weird.

*More weirdness… I joke lately how I’m a witch (which I need to find a new term for), because of all the random coincidences that happen to me lately. I really feel like Louise Miller in Teen Witch, though my powers kicked in at 30 instead of 16. Anyway, more moments of ‘I thought of someone and then they called’ happened all week long. It’s no longer weirding me out, as it’s becoming my new norm. Yes, maybe I’m a weirdo.

*Awesomeness is getting an unexpected package for Koda from my aunt and uncle, and the sweetest V-day card from Fishface’s aunt. Sweet aunts and uncle! Love them so.

TGIF, y’all!
